Psychology Today Mental Health Professionals:
Start Getting Clients
& Stop Stressing
Let’s face it, having a Mental Health practice isn’t easy, especially in these hard economic times. Not only do you have to worry about local competition, but things like Skype are changing the landscape of mental health services.
While I know this isn’t news to you, what are you doing today to ensure that you will have a Mental Health Practice tomorrow?
Chances are, you aren’t doing everything you need to do because you didn’t get in the Mental Health field because you liked marketing, sales, or public relations. You got into it because you loved to help people with their Mental Health issues.
Then you discovered something that every Mental Health professional knows: Unless people know about your Mental Health practice, you can’t help anyone! So, like most Mental Health professionals, you jump haphazardly into the process I like to call “Blindfold Whack-a-Mole Advertising.”
Chances are you have played whack-a-mole and know what a challenge it is to actually hit the moles that pop up; now, imagine playing the game with a blindfold. Sure you may get lucky every now and again, but most of your effort is wasted because you can’t see the game and can’t even map out a plan to nail the moles.
The same happens with many Mental Health Professionals. (I am not talking about you, of course). They allow themselves to be approached by sales people whose sole mission is to get you to use their services to market your Mental Health practice, whether it makes sense or not for your type of practice.
Without having a plan or someone to help, the Mental Health Professional often says, “Well, it’s better than nothing. At least I am doing something.” When you hear that, think of Blindfold Whack-a-Mole, swinging when you have a good chance of hitting the mole makes sense. And if you know that each time you swing it costs you money, you might consider whether you want to swing.
And that’s where we come in to the picture. Through effective public relations and marketing, we work to maximize the chances of you succeeding.
